Healthy Skin after 40

Healthy Skin after 40

Oh how we wish our skin still looked like it did when we were 20! It’s true, as we age, the needs of our skin change and become more complicated. In a perfect world, we have all been incorporating these recommendations into our skincare regimen since we were in our 20s, but let’s be real. Life happened. College days didn’t leave much money for high end skin care, and then, kids came into the picture and we were more concerned about their skin than our own!

Thankfully, it’s never too late to start great habits to help your skin be its radiant and healthy best. Our friends at Best Life have given us the down and dirty on 40 Ways to Guarantee Healthy Skin After 40. Although we’ll need to provide a little more TLC than before, these are steps we can all easily incorporate into our daily/weekly lives. The best part of this list? Barely Blush Skin Care can help you with the many of the suggestions on their list.

Use the right cleanser for your skin type.

Healthy skin is clean skin, so a facial cleanser is a no brainer, but make sure you’re using a facial cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type. Foaming cleansers, such as our AHA Foaming Cleanser, will remove makeup, dirt and oil beneath the surface. Dry skin? Go for an oil-based cleanser such as our Pure Cleansing Gel, with the key ingredient, rosehip oil. Acne prone and oily skin types should try our zit-fighting formula, Alpha Beta Cleanser, that contains ingredients like Salicylic Acid.

Get steamy.

The warm, moist air of a steam room will help open pores up, purging dirt and oil while allowing for the products that follow the steam to absorb more completely.

Start your day with a daytime serum with antioxidants.

Antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, are great at protecting us from free radicals and make a great companion to your daily sunscreen. Dermatologists agree that antioxidants like our Vitamin CBE & Ferulic Serum can help repair and even prevent further skin damage.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Day and night, it’s always a good time to moisturize. After age 40, the oil production in our skin tends to slow down, so we need to help it along by replenishing the moisture from the outside in. Be sure to wait about 5 minutes after your serum dries, and then thoroughly apply a healthy amount of hydrating moisturizer to your skin. Our Super Hyaluronic Moisturizing Cream packs in the hydration with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

Skip processed foods and sugar as much as possible.

The notion that you are what you eat applies to our skin, too. Processed foods, and those with lots of sugar will leave you with a duller complexion that’s also more prone to breakouts. Try to cut (or seriously limit) sugar from your diet and you’ll see a change in your skin within a week or two!

Reach for eats rich in probiotics.

So if bad choices drive your complexion crazy, great choices will leave it radiant. Seek out foods rich in not only antioxidants, but also probiotics, those naturally occurring, good-for-your-gut bacteria that help strengthen your immune system.

Slather on the SPF.

Everyone now knows that we should be applying (and reapplying!) a quality UVA/UVB SPF 30 or better sunscreen to prevent sunburns, damage and signs of aging. Check out our SPF 30 sunscreens that will fit almost any skin tone!

Eye cream is a MUST.

If you’re not already using an eye cream, 40 is the time to start. The skin around our eyes is much thinner than the rest of our face and thus more gentle, requiring a different mix of ingredients than the skin on the rest of your face does. Our eye cream Vitamin K, DCX and Arnica Eye Cream will help you see less lines and minimize puffiness for an all day rested look!

Masks aren’t just for special occasions.

At our age, it’s important to employ the aid of a face mask weekly to see better results. Our Zinc and Sulphur face mask is designed to smooth the complexion and draw out impurities.

Don’t forget about your hands.

Hands are the sneaky secret giveaway to age. Since hands are frequently exposed to the elements and receive little car, they tend to look the most weathered—and quickly. Use a crazy hydrating hand cream, along with a daily coating of SPF to keep things smooth and protected.

Treat age spots with a skin lightener.

Age spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, may be inevitable if you’re not hypervigilant about sunscreen. By the time 40 comes around, you may notice some dark spots on your skin that you hadn’t noticed before. We recommend our GigaWhite/BioWhite Serum, which includes naturally derived plant extracts that help to block melanin production in the skin, removing and preventing dark spots and discoloration.

Exfoliate regularly but gently.

The process of exfoliation aids in cell turnover by removing dead skin and is key to keeping skin clean and young looking. Use a gentle exfoliant, like our Micro-Dermabrasion Cream, about once a week. For a daily exfoliant, try our BHA Lotion Exfoliant. Make sure you don’t over-scrub: You can trigger the overproduction of oil, which is why you were exfoliating in the first place!

Keep an eye out for adult acne.

Unfortunately, high school isn’t the only time we experience pesky zits. Adult acne is very common. Treat those blemishes without Blemex Drying Lotion, which helps to rid you of pimples and helps to keep them away.

Look for skin-care products rich in peptides.

Take a closer look at the ingredient label when you’re stocking up on beauty products, and look for scrubs, essences, and lotions with skin-fortifying ingredients, particularly peptides. Ask any aesthetician and they’ll swear by the amino acids, essentially fragmented proteins. They’ll help skin become more resilient against any kind of attack—from pollution, cigarette smoke, or whatever irritants are lurking in the air. Barely Blush offers five products that pack a peptide punch!

Or products with AHAs.

Another great ingredient to look out for is AHA—alpha hydroxy acid—which is often found in peels and other skin-resurfacing products. These are often seen called by their actual names, such as glycolic or lactic acids (both are AHAs). You’ll love our 15% Fruit Acid Gel with Kojic Acid, which dissolves dead skin cells quickly to reveal radiant new skin below.

Add a fish-oil supplement.

Fish oil is rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, which help ward off inflammation. Taken regularly, adult acne is greatly diminished, as is the appearance of sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles.

Wash your face every single night.

If you’re just too tired, leave a set of micellar water-spiked face wipes, on your nightstand. That way, you can wash your face in bed—officially leaving you with no excuse. Our Pearlescent Cleanser is great for nightly use. This mild cleanser has just a few ingredients, making it perfect for those with sensitivity concerns.

Drink lots of water.

Probably the most oft-given piece of celeb advice for glowing skin—and easily the most employed by professionals—is simply: drink a ton of water. The more water you drink, the more you flood your cells and your organs, skin included. When the skin is at its optimal moisture levels, it’s at its healthiest.

Most importantly, take care of YOU and enjoy life! Which of these are you already doing? And which do you want to start? Let us know below or on our Facebook page!
